Do we really love the life we live and live the life we love?

The question has been etched in my mind for quite a while now. A simple yet challenging quote by Bob Marley has most of us examine our lives. With this ongoing pandemic, are we really able to love the life we're living? Are we really living the life we love? Did the people who lost their lives recently? My family and I have mourned the loss of quite a few relatives and friends in the past few years. I know that it wasn’t easy for them…it never is. But from all the stories told on their behalf by their loved ones I know that most of them, if not all, did live by this inspiring quote. Their deaths, though heart-rending, has motivated me to live the best life I possibly can. It has got me thinking about what legacy I want to leave behind.

In all honesty, I haven’t truly loved the life I’ve been living recently. I’ve been stuck at home for more than a year now. As a college-going student, I miss my college life. I miss my friends and I miss my normal schedule of classes and practical labs. Not just me but a lot of other people around me are struggling with anxiety due to uncertainties. While I haven’t been fond of my life here, I don’t hate it either.

I’m grateful to be home with my parents and my little brother, nevertheless. I’ve been able to attend prayer meetings and be a part of my church’s worship team. I’ve gained some practical incite in my area of study by going to hospitals and medical camps that will help me in my career in the near future. I’ve met people who have taught me what I now know. And for the first time in a long time, my family and I had a private weekend getaway! Though short lived, the mini vacation never fails to put a smile on our faces whenever we think of it.

If you ask me how to love the life you live, I won’t know how to answer because at the moment I don’t love it neither do I hate it. I’m just grateful to be alive. Loving the life you live can be a little difficult, especially in this pandemic, but it is doable. You just have to keep doing the things you enjoy that build you up, and relax you. Keep counting your blessings and be grateful for them. Take the challenges that life throws at you as lessons. Live in the moment. We may not always love the situation we’re in but we can still be content, if not in love, with the life we live.

The good news is nothing lasts forever. The bad news is nothing lasts forever. Life is too short to not do the things we love. It’s too short for us to be afraid of making mistakes. They’re inevitable for we are but humans. Does fear paralyze us from living? The Bible reminds us 365 times to not fear. The God I know wants us to live with over-flowing joy because He always guides and provides. He will always make your paths straight when you trust and submit your plans to Him (Proverbs 3:4-5). There is assurance in Him.

Don’t fear failure and just get out there! Do that very thing you had been postponing for later because you were waiting for the right time! There’s never going to be a right time. Go try that new thing you’ve so wanted to try but fear kept holding you back. Get a tattoo, bro! Or learn a new instrument. Post your covers, random videos, photographs of you or other things on Instagram. It don’t matter what other people think. You do you! Take on the world! Surround yourself with encouraging people who you know will inspire you and keep you disciplined enough so that you may achieve all that you want to. I know it’s hard. But just do it!

I’ve taken on my fear of needles and of hurting someone with a needle by learning how to poke people correctly to check for their glucose levels and hemoglobin, and by giving the COVID-19 vaccination to my father. Another big step of mine is starting this blog. If I can do things that are out of my comfort zone, so can you! After all this writing I have come to realize that perhaps if we keep doing the things we love and stop fearing judgment, if we keep living the life we love and learning, we may be able to love the life we live.

So cheers to you, cheers to me, and cheers to us for learning every day to love the life we live and live the life we love!

  4. "Love the life you live .... "

For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, SELF CONTROL; and to self control, perseverance; and to perseverance, GODLINESS; and to Godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you posses three qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
